How to Buy a Massage Chair: The Complete Guide for Indian Homes

Ten decisions, in the order that matters. Most buyers start with features and end up with a chair that doesn't fit them or their room. Start with the person and the space instead.

Start with the person, not the brochure

Write down who will sit in the chair most, how tall they are, and roughly how old. A chair bought for a 30 year old gym regular and one bought for a 68 year old with stiff knees are different purchases, even at the same price. The first wants depth and intensity. The second wants an easy entry and exit, a gentle lowest setting, and a remote that does not need a manual.

Height matters more than almost anything else on a spec sheet. Massage chairs are designed around a range of heights, and outside that range the shoulder rollers start in the wrong place and the leg rest ends at the wrong spot on the calf. If two people of very different builds will share the chair, both of them should try it before you buy.

And if anyone who will use it is pregnant, has a pacemaker, has osteoporosis, a blood clotting condition or recent surgery, ask their doctor first. That is a standard caution printed in every massage chair manual, ours included, not a formality.

Set the budget, then understand what it buys

Full-body massage chairs in India run from roughly ₹50,000 to several lakh. Our own range sits between ₹90,000 and ₹4,00,000. Price buys three things in this category, in roughly this order: the quality of the roller mechanism, the length of the track it runs on, and the build of the frame, motors and airbags that have to survive years of daily use.

BudgetWhat you can expectWhat to watch for
Under ₹1 lakh2D or basic 3D rollers, a shorter track, airbags on legs and armsThin padding, noisy motors, service that is hard to find
₹1 to 2 lakh3D or 4D rollers on an SL track, zero gravity, heat, body scanThe sweet spot for most homes. Compare fit and foot rollers closely
₹2 lakh and up4D on a long track, heated shawls or calves, voice control, AI body detectionMake sure you will use the extras, and that someone local services them

Judge the price you will actually pay, not the discount. A struck-through MRP is a number the seller chooses for themselves, so a 60% saving tells you very little. Compare the final figures, delivered and installed, side by side.

3D or 4D, and why you can ignore 5D, 6D and 7D

A 2D chair moves its rollers up and down and side to side. A 3D chair adds depth, pushing the rollers further into the muscle or easing them back. A 4D chair moves on those same three axes but varies the speed and rhythm within each stroke, slowing as it presses and speeding up as it releases, which is closer to how a therapist's hands work.

That is where the real dimensions stop. A roller can only move in three directions, and the fourth is time. Listings that say 5D, 6D or 7D are describing a 4D mechanism plus a feature, usually a body scan, heat, voice control or lights, and giving it a bigger number. Ask which direction the fifth D moves in and watch the answer.

Track length decides how much of you gets massaged

The rollers can only go where the rail goes. An S track follows the curve of the spine but stops at the lower back. An L track runs under the seat to the glutes and hamstrings but is straighter along the spine. An SL track does both, and is what you want if you sit for a living or carry tension in the hips. Compare track length in centimeters where the seller gives it, not just the letters.

The features worth paying for, and the ones that aren't

  • Body scan: worth it. The chair finds your shoulder height before it starts, so the rollers work on muscle rather than bone.
  • Zero-gravity recline: worth it. Raising the legs above the heart lets your body weight sink onto the rollers, and the same program feels noticeably deeper.
  • Foot rollers: worth it. Airbags alone squeeze the feet. Rollers under the soles are a different and, for most people, better massage.
  • Heat: worth it, at the back and ideally the calves. Warm muscle takes pressure more comfortably.
  • Wall-hugging recline: worth it in a small room. The chair slides forward as it reclines and needs only a few centimeters behind it.
  • Voice control, Bluetooth speakers, mood lighting: nice, not decisive. Do not pay a large premium for them.

Measure the room, the doorway and the stairs

Chairs are listed upright and used reclined. A typical full-body chair is around 160 cm long upright and stretches to 185 cm or more when it lies back, and it weighs 90 to 130 kg. Put masking tape on the floor at the reclined footprint before you decide, and check the space behind the backrest.

Then measure the delivery route. The carton is close to two meters long, so the narrowest doorway, the turn at the top of the stairs and the inside of the lift all matter. A good seller will ask for these numbers before delivery day. If they don't, give them anyway.

Check the power before the chair arrives

A massage chair draws a couple of hundred watts at most, a fraction of an electric iron, so the electricity bill is a non-issue. The supply is the risk. Look for a wide input voltage range on the spec sheet, give the chair a socket of its own with a working earth, and add a stabilizer only if your area genuinely needs one. Voltage damage is excluded from almost every appliance warranty in India.

Warranty, service and returns are part of the price

A massage chair has motors, airbags, hoses, a control board and upholstery, and over years one of them will need attention. Before you pay, get clear answers to four questions:

  • How long is the warranty, and does it cover parts and labor or parts only?
  • Who services the chair, and where is the nearest technician who has opened this model?
  • Is service at your home, or do you have to send the chair somewhere?
  • What is the return window, and what does a return cost you?

Our own terms are on our warranty and returns pages: twelve months of manufacturer warranty, doorstep service in serviceable locations, and a 7-day return window. Whatever seller you choose, get theirs in writing.

Sit in it before you pay for it

Nothing in this guide replaces fifteen minutes in the chair. Run the body scan, sit through a full automatic program, recline into zero gravity mid-session, push the intensity one step past comfortable, and take your shoes off for the foot rollers. Do it in two chairs back to back and the differences stop being abstract.

Delivery, installation and paying for it

Ask whether the price includes carrying the chair to your floor, unboxing, assembly and a walkthrough of the controls. A courier who leaves a 120 kg carton at the gate has not delivered a massage chair. We deliver free across India, and in Jaipur our own team brings it in, sets it up and shows the family how it works.

If you would rather spread the cost, most chairs in this price band can be bought on EMI. We are on the Bajaj Finserv network, subject to the lender's approval.

Frequently asked

How much should I spend on a massage chair in India?
For most homes the best value sits between ₹1 lakh and ₹2 lakh, where you get 3D or 4D rollers on an SL track, zero gravity, heat and a body scan. Below that, build quality and service tend to drop off sharply.
Is a 4D massage chair better than a 3D one?
A 4D chair varies the speed and rhythm of each stroke, which many people find more natural. A good 3D chair on a long SL track is still plenty for most home users. Sit in both before deciding.
Do 5D, 6D or 7D massage chairs exist?
Not as a mechanism. Rollers move in three physical directions plus variable timing, which is 4D. Higher numbers describe a 4D chair with added features such as body scanning, heat or voice control.
How much space does a massage chair need?
Plan for about 190 cm of length when reclined and roughly 75 to 80 cm of width. A wall-hugging chair needs only a few centimeters behind it; others need considerably more.
What should I check before buying a massage chair online?
Whether it fits the main user's height, the track length, the reclined dimensions, the warranty and who services it locally. If you can, try the same model in a showroom before ordering.
