How to Test a Massage Chair in Fifteen Minutes

You get one sitting to decide. Here is how to spend it so the chair does the talking instead of the salesperson.

Before you sit down

Wear something you can relax in and give yourself five minutes to stop rushing, because a chair tested while you are still catching your breath from the car park will feel wrong no matter how good it is. Then ask the salesperson to leave you alone for the session. You cannot judge a massage while being talked at, and any showroom that will not give you the room is telling you something.

The fifteen minutes, in order

  • Run the body scan and check that the shoulder rollers land on your shoulders. If the fit is wrong for your height, nothing after this point matters.
  • Start a full-body automatic program and watch where the rollers stop at the bottom. Waist, or thighs?
  • Recline into zero gravity mid-program. The same pressure should suddenly feel deeper, and if nothing changes the recline is not doing its job.
  • Push the intensity one step past comfortable, then bring it back down. You are testing the range, not the maximum.
  • Switch the heat on and give it two or three minutes to actually get warm before you judge it.
  • Take your shoes off and try the foot rollers, which is where cheap chairs are most obviously cheap.
  • Get out of the chair without help. Some are considerably harder to leave than to enter.

Four questions to ask out loud

  • Who services this chair, and where are they based?
  • What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
  • What are the reclined dimensions and the wall clearance?
  • How is it delivered and installed, and will it fit through a standard doorway?

A vague answer to any of those is information too.

Come and sit in one

Frequently asked

Do I need an appointment to try a massage chair?
No. Our Malviya Nagar showroom in Jaipur is open to walk-ins, and you are welcome to try any chair in the range with no obligation to buy.
How long should I sit in a chair before deciding?
At least one full automatic program, which is around fifteen minutes. Anything shorter and you are judging a first impression rather than the massage.
