Why a Massage Chair Belongs at Your Wedding

It is a corner of the venue with a massage chair in it, and usually a foot massager or two beside it. That is the whole idea. Guests sit down for fifteen minutes between functions, get a proper full-body massage, and go back out. No spa booking, no appointment, no staff of therapists. One chair, a wall socket and somebody to hand out turns.

We have set these up at weddings around Jaipur and the pattern is always the same. It looks like a novelty for the first hour. By the evening there is a line.

An Indian wedding is a physical event. Nobody says this out loud, but look at what you are actually asking of the people who came: travel, a hotel bed that is not theirs, a mehendi that runs late, a sangeet with hours of dancing, a haldi in the afternoon sun, and then a reception where everyone is standing in shoes chosen for photographs rather than for hours on marble floors.

Then you feed them beautifully and hand them a drink and expect them to look delighted. Most of them are. They are also tired in a way that no amount of catering fixes, because the problem is in their back and their calves.

• Relatives who flew or drove in the day before and slept badly
• Parents on both sides, who have been on their feet since the first function and have hosted every one of them
• Grandparents and older guests, who leave early not because they want to but because standing is the limit
• Your own friends, who danced for four hours and are pretending their legs are fine
• The couple, who will be photographed for six hours straight

Every wedding budgets for how the guests will eat, drink and look. Almost none of them budget for how the guests will feel by day three.

Be honest about what actually distinguishes one big wedding from another these days. The decor is better than it was ten years ago and so is everybody else's. The food counters are excellent and so are everybody else's. Guests attending their fifth wedding of the season are not going to remember your floral arrangement, however much it cost, because they have now seen a great many floral arrangements.

A premium massage chair in the middle of all that is genuinely unexpected. It reads as thoughtful rather than expensive, which is a rarer effect and a much harder one to buy. And it does something no other element of the evening does: it gives people a specific reason to walk over, sit together and talk while they wait their turn. Small queues at a wedding are not a problem. They are where the evening actually happens.

It also photographs and films well, which matters more than anyone admits. A guest in a zero-gravity recline with the lights behind them is a better frame than another shot of the buffet.

Younger guests try it first because they try everything first. They enjoy it, they film it, they move on. The people who come back are the older ones, and the parents of the couple.

That is worth planning around. If there is one group at your wedding that has genuinely earned fifteen minutes off their feet, it is the four people who have been hosting since Tuesday. Put the chair somewhere they can reach without crossing the whole hall, and tell them it is there. They will not go looking for it on their own.

Set the intensity low as the default and let people ask for more. A first-timer on a high setting decides the chair is uncomfortable and never sits in it again, which is the opposite of the result you paid for.

A massage chair is less demanding to host than most people assume, but it is not furniture you can push into any gap. Three things decide the spot: power, clearance and noise.

• Power: an ordinary 240V wall socket is enough. Our Z95 Elite draws 180 W, which is less than most stage lighting, so no separate line or generator feed is needed. What it does need is a socket that will not be unplugged mid-evening for someone's decor.
• Clearance: leave space behind for the recline and in front for the leg rest. Against a wall with a metre to spare on each side is the practical rule, and it keeps the cable out of the walkway.
• Noise: the Z95 Elite runs under 60 dB, so it will not compete with the music. In a quiet mandap it is audible, which is one more reason to keep it off to the side.
• Flooring: a level, firm surface. Not a lawn, and not the edge of a stage.
• Somebody watching it: not a security detail, just one person from the venue or catering team who manages turns and wipes the headrest between guests.

On throughput, do the arithmetic before you decide how many chairs to book. Sessions run around fifteen minutes, so one chair serves roughly three or four guests an hour once you count getting in and out. For a two-hundred-guest function where the chair is a highlight rather than a service, one is plenty. For a long reception where you want most people to get a turn, two chairs and a pair of foot massagers move the line considerably faster.

This is the part where a seller is supposed to suggest you buy the chair. We would rather tell you the truth: for one wedding, rent it. A premium massage chair is a serious purchase and it should be made because someone in the house will use it every day for the next several years, not because a function needs a centerpiece.
